Curcuma Xanthorrhiza Roxb (CURCUMIN) is a plant which stalk up 2 meters high, with a round tuber (yellow inside) with some crablike side-roots. The root system consists mainly of a rhizome with a diameter up to 6 cm in form of an egg, with an aromatic pungent odour and a sharp aromatic and bitter taste. The leaves are ginger like. The flower stalks is 1.5-3 cm long; the flower colour is yellow with a dark yellow lip; they are located in groups of 3 or 4.

 Curcuma Xanthorrhiza Roxb, a medicinal plant, has been shown to exert diverse physiological functions. Either the fresh rhizomes or a decoction of the dried and sliced rhizomes of Curcuma Xanthorrhiza (Curcumin) has been used to encourage bile secretion, to treat liver diseases, as febrifuge, as a cholagogue, as lactagogues, for skin diseases, as anti-pyretic, to eliminate cramps, for inflammation of the rectum, for bloody diarrhoea, for dysentery, for stomach disorders caused by cold, for children's fever, for flatulence, for haemorrholds, as carminative, as anti-constipation and as a tonic. Curcumin has the ability for anti-viral, anti inflammation, antibacterial and antioxidant. Its use in western medicine is based on a clearer understanding of its properties and utilization. |
